What is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the supporting tissue of the teeth. The specialty focuses on deformities and diseases of the gums as well as the bone that supports teeth. Dr Straka completed a three year postgraduate periodontal residency program at Temple University School of Dentistry after the traditional four year Dental program.

This dental specialty treats gum disease and is trained to place implants. Some common procedures that are also treated by a periodontist are Crown Lengthening and Gum grafting to cover exposed root surfaces. A periodontist can also perform cosmetic procedures to help you achieve that perfect smile.

Usually a referral informs a patient of the need to see a periodontist. But, some patients feel compelled to seek a periodontist on their own.

Your teeth and dental health contribute to your quality of life. In today’s health care system many specialists are utilized by the public in order to provide specific patient care. Your teeth are no different.
